Gov. Gregoires statement on economic stabilization package

For Immediate Release: September 29, 2008

OLYMPIA Gov. Chris Gregoire issued the following statement urging passage of an economic stabilization package:

The failure by the U.S. House of Representatives to approve economic stabilization legislation is disappointing. The lack of oversight by the federal government has been damaging, and it is time Congress comes together to find a compromise that puts the economic interests and security of the American people first.

In addition to providing emergency support for the nations financial infrastructure, we must protect our working families who are the most vulnerable to economic shifts. A final package should guarantee immediate accountability of the banking industry and federal regulators. Any plan should put taxpayers first and ensure they are not asked to shoulder the burden of paying millions of dollars in CEO salaries and golden parachutes.

I will continue my diligent efforts working with federal, state and local leaders to make certain that Washington is equipped to weather this economic storm.
