Gov. Gregoire orders flag lowering - Flags lowered in memory of Spanaway soldier

For Immediate Release: April 3, 2008

OLYMPIA Gov. Chris Gregoire has directed that flags at all Washington state agency facilities be lowered to half-staff today, April 3, in memory of U. S. Army Spc. Durrell L. Bennett of Spanaway. Bennett was killed in action in Baghdad, Iraq, on March 29.

This is the third time the governor has directed flags to be lowered at state agencies since Congress amended the U.S. Flag Code. The amendment allows governors to lower flags when a member of the military is killed in the line of duty.

Other government offices, citizens and businesses are encouraged to join this recognition.
Flags should remain at half-staff until sunset today or first thing Friday morning, April 4.
