With temperatures topping 100 degrees in Washington this week, make sure to do what you can to stay cool. I know we’re not really used to this kind of weather here, but severe heat should be taken very seriously. It can make you ill. It can even kill you. Don’t let that happen.

As much as possible, stay in air-conditioned places. Drink lots of fluids, and avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugar. Eat light meals. Wear light clothing.

Don’t forget people who can’t help themselves—infants and children, the elderly, the ill, and the immobile. You may want to check on your neighbors to make sure they’re okay. And remember your animals. Never leave a person or a pet in a parked vehicle.

Do what you can to keep the heat out. Cover your windows to block the sun.

If you must go outside, try to confine strenuous activities to early or late in the day. Take frequent breaks.
