With looming layoffs and budget cuts, state employees continue to prove their generosity by giving through the states workplace giving program, the Combined Fund Drive (CFD).

Washington state employees donated more than $1.7 million to local, national and international charities in the first three months of 2009.

Charities welcome these much needed dollars. Many are seeing a downward trend in donations, but an increased demand for services.

Robert Coit, Executive Director of the Thurston County Food Bank, knows this all too well. He told us, “People just don’t seem to have enough money for the simple things like bread and eggs.” According to Coit, the food bank has experienced a 39 percent increase in the number of hungry children and families coming through the door.

This year the CFD celebrates its 25th Anniversary. Since the inception of the CFD, more than $89 million has been pledged to charities throughout Washington State and the world by public employees and retirees. Learn more at www.cfd.wa.gov.
