This week I had the great honor to meet with Washington Army National Guard troops in Iraq. The gratitude I hold for these men and women is immense. Our citizen soldiers are our friends, neighbors and co-workers. They deserve our unwavering support and have my profound respect.

In August, I participated in several farewell ceremonies for our troops as they left to serve in Operation Iraqi Freedom. I promised I would visit them as I am humbled by their service for our state and our country.  Visiting Iraq, I have gained an even deeper understanding and appreciation of the enormous challenges the troops face each day.

On behalf of all Washingtonians, I thank our troops for their great sacrifice. My husband is a veteran and our prayers go out to all who serve, and the families, friends and colleagues who support them.

Approximately 2,500 members of the Washington National Guard serve in locations around the world, most of them with the 81st Brigade in Iraq. I wish them all Godspeed and a safe journey home.
