Called the “Law Enforcement Challenge,” the award recognizes excellence in reducing deaths and injuries on the nation's highways. The Patrol was one of 23 prior category winners competing for this year's designation, and came out on top.

This exceptional honor belongs to the men and women of WSP who are committed to reducing deaths and injuries on Washington highways. There were approximately 70 fewer deaths in 2007 than in 2006.

It also belongs to more than just the uniformed troopers seen on the highway. Non-commissioned staff also contribute greatly to highway safety.

Gov. Gregoire has been a leader in supporting WSP. She signed legislation that improves emergency communications, ensures the DNA of all registered sex offenders is in the crime lab database, and deters drunk drivers by making DUI a felony.

We have received other honors in recent years, including 2007's naming of now-retired Trooper Kelly Kalmbach as IACP “Trooper of the Year.”
