State government, like the people we serve, represents a diverse mix of cultures and ethnicities. As an employer, the state is committed to having a work force that benefits from Washington’s diversity in culture, race, ethnicity, ability and gender.

Earlier this week, I attended a brand-new professional networking event sponsored by Puget Sound Connections, a group of 17 public and private companies joining forces to welcome and support diverse professionals new to the Seattle area. The Department of Personnel is proud to be a member of Puget Sound Connections, working alongside companies such as Starbucks, Alaska Air and Boeing to build and support a diverse Washington work force.

It’s wonderful to be in such prestigious company welcoming people to Washington. The state is committed to working together to build public and private partnerships on important topics like diversity. It’s not just about representing differences — it’s about learning and benefiting from unique people.

That’s the kind of team we aspire to build in Washington because the work we do matters to real people, and the problems we must solve are critical. Whether they concern saving children, keeping neighborhoods safe or protecting the environment, we need the best and the brightest on board.

On Wednesday night, I met new people motivated to make a difference in Washington. I am excited for their future and the future of this great state.
