These records include indexing and images of marriage applications, returns, and certificates recorded by the King County Auditor between 1855 and 1969 and the King County Recorder between 1970 and the present.
Copies of marriage certificates, (1855 to 1990), and marriage returns (1891 to 1947, with the bulk of these records between 1891 and 1915) were digitized, indexed, and submitted to the Digital Archives from holdings at the Washington State Archives, Puget Sound Regional Branch and the King County Archives.
Indexing to electronic copies of marriage applications and certificates, 1991-present, were transferred directly to the Washington State Archives, Digital Archives from the King County Recorder, who transfers recently recorded documents periodically.

|Agency History:||King County was created in 1852 from Thurston County by the Oregon Territorial Legislature. Originally named after Vice President Rufus King, the county was renamed by the Washington State Legislature in 2005 in honor of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The county seat is Seattle.|
