Agency History: | Created in 1852, Pierce County is located in the south Puget Sound on land that has been the traditional home for the Puyallup, Nisqually, Squaxin Island, and Muckleshoot people. The County’s Public Works department was established by resolution of the County Commissioners in 1970 with the County Engineer named as its Director. In 2017, Planning and Land Services and Public Works merged to form Planning and Public Works Department (PPW) and is responsible for the county road and levee systems, sewer systems, airports, ferries, building permits, environmental review, sustainability, community planning, and code enforcement.
The Surface Water Management division within PPW, formed in 1988, manages waters subject to flooding conditions from, rivers, streams, tidal, urban runoff and or bodies of water by minimizing the risk of flood damage and protecting and improving water quality. |
