This database contains the Social Security Death Index (SSDI) for those individuals who either had a Social Security card issued in Washington State, had their last residence in Washington state, or had their last benefit payment mailed to an address in Washington State just prior to their death from 1937 to February of 2014.
This index only includes people who were issued a social security number. A social Security number was voluntary, and not required for employees until 1962, and few children had Social Security numbers until 1986. All of those people who had not been issued a Social Security number at the time of their death are not included in this index.
In December of 2013 Congress passed a law that restricts the release of the Social Security Death Index until three years from the date of death. This took effect in March of 2014.

|Agency History:||The Social Security Administration was initially created as the Social Security Board by the Social Security Act of 1935. The Board changed to an Administration in 1946. The agency has been under several other federal agencies including the Federal Security Agency (1939-1953), the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (1953-1980), and the Department of Health and Human Services (1980-1994). The SSA has been an independent agency since 1994. Their mission is to deliver social security services that meet the changing needs of the public.|
