Agency History: | In 1852, Isaiah L. Scammon and his wife, Lorinda S. Scammon settled the area. Mrs. Scammon, a deeply religious woman, wanted to name the area Mount Zion, but the name was changed to Montesano on the suggestion of another pioneer, Samuel James, who thought it sounded more pleasant and had roughly the same meaning. The City of Montesano was incorporated in 1883 and is the county seat of Grays Harbor County. |
