Locke announces Dana Middleton’s resignation as communications director

OLYMPIA — Gov. Gary Locke today reluctantly accepted the resignation of Dana Middleton, his communications director.

“Dana brought a wealth of communications experience to my administration during especially critical times. It is with sadness that I accept her resignation,” Locke said. “I will greatly miss her expertise, high energy and dedication.”

Middleton served at the governor’s communications helm through a major earthquake, an energy crisis, a drought, a record fire season, the move of The Boeing Company headquarters, the second-longest legislative session in state history and most recently, the September 11 terrorist attacks.

“It has truly been an honor and a privilege to work for you,” Middleton stated in a letter to the governor. “I cannot thank you enough for the opportunity.”

“The challenges have been trying, rewarding and edifying. I wouldn’t trade a moment of this experience for anything,” Middleton added. “I have been proud to work with someone of such integrity and honesty.”

After serving in Locke’s administration since March 2000, Middleton resigned her post to spend more time closer to home in Seattle.

With more than 27 years of broadcast experience in such roles as news director, executive producer, radio and television news anchor, Middleton earned numerous honors in broadcast journalism.

Prior to her public service with the governor’s office, Middleton worked as a television news anchor for Northwest Cable News and hosted KOMO-TV'sNorthwest Afternoon,” a daily one-hour live broadcast. She also worked for the News Travel Network, a nationally-syndicated series on world travel.

Pearse Edwards, who currently serves as a deputy communications director for the governor, has been named acting communications director, effective Dec. 20.
