1857 Mason County 
Introduction:
The Washington Territorial Legislature created Mason County on March 9, 1854. Originally named Sawamish (meaning a drifting or not a permanent people) after the local Native American tribe, the county’s name changed in 1864 to honor Charles Mason, the first Secretary of Washington Territory.
