Gov. Gregoire appoints Superior Court judge for Kitsap County

OLYMPIA � Gov. Chris Gregoire today announced she has appointed Steve Dixon to the Kitsap County Superior Court. Dixon is currently a solo practitioner in Port Orchard, where his practice emphasizes civil litigation. He fills the position held by the late Judge Theodore F. Spearman.

�Steve has extensive legal experience in all areas of law that come before the court,� Gregoire said. �His knowledge of a wide-range of legal issues and his considerable trial experience will be a great benefit to the bench. I welcome him to this new role.�
�I am honored that Governor Gregoire saw fit to appoint me to such an important position,� Dixon said. �I intend to justify the trust she has placed in me by working very hard and diligently for the people of Kitsap County and the state of Washington. I look forward to putting to work everything I have learned in more than thirty years in the practice of law to the preservation and betterment of the justice system in Kitsap County. I am particularly mindful that I am assuming a position once held by a man greatly beloved by the bench and bar.�

�The Kitsap County Superior Court bench is excited to welcome Steve Dixon,� Presiding Judge Anna M. Laurie said. �Mr. Dixon is a highly regarded attorney with the potential to be great judge. His intelligence, wisdom, and expertise will serve the citizens of Kitsap County very well.�

Dixon began his legal career in 1981 as an associate attorney with a firm in Othello, focusing on criminal and civil practice, with an emphasis in litigation. He then joined Crawford, McGilliard, Peterson, Yelish & Dixon where he became a partner. His work included representing clients in both criminal and civil cases.

Dixon serves as board member on the Kitsap Adult Center for Education and provides representation to those who cannot afford legal services through the Kitsap Volunteer Attorney Services organization. He has also donated time providing legal advice to non-profits such as Habitat for Humanity, Hospice of Kitsap County and the South Kitsap Helpline.

Dixon earned his bachelor�s degree from Whitman College in philosophy and environmental studies-biology in 1977. He went on to earn his law degree from Willamette University Law School in 1980.

Gov. Gregoire today also appointed to the Kitsap County Superior Court, Kevin Hull who will replace Judge Russell W. Hartman, who retired from the bench effective February 29, 2012.
