This collection consists of indexing and some images of license applications for certification as registered nurses, 1909-1917.
Information on the application forms includes name, date, education, experience, age, residence, school of graduation, and other personal information. The majority of application files include photographs of the applicants.
In 1909, the Washington State Legislature passed a law establishing the Washington State Board of Nurse Examiners which codified the requirements for professional nurses. It was one of the first states to do so. The established law required nurses to meet education requirements, pass an examination, and apply to be a registered nurse. Applications from 1909-1917 made under this law and kept by the Department of Licensing have been digitized and are accessible online through this collection.
