The Washington Territorial Legislature created Kittitas County on November 24, 1883. It is named after the Native American word, Kittitas, meaning “gray gravel bank” but it has also been said to mean “plenty food.” It was organized from portions of Yakima County. The county is located east of the Cascade Mountains in the geographical center of the state.
