| Introduction | This collection consists of license applications to practice medicine in Washington, as well as registers of practicing physicians in Washington. It includes license years 1833-1946. Information on the application forms includes name, age, birthplace, residence, place of practice, specialization, locations of previous practice, as well as educational background. Prior to 1921, the Department of Health was responsible for overseeing physicians’ license applications. The Department of Licensing, Business and Professions Division took responsibility for these license applications from 1921-1946. Applications kept by the Department of Health and the Department of Licensing, Business and Professions Division have been digitized and are accessible online through this collection. In addition to licensing applications, the Business and Professions Division kept registers of physicians practicing in Washington that include license years 1833-1946. These register entries do not include applications, so only their indexing is available online. There are 10,402 records in this database. These records are open for research.
