The Washington Territorial Legislature created Kitsap County in 1857. It was originally named Slaughter County in honor of Lt. William Slaughter who died in 1855 during the Indian Wars and it was once part of King and Jefferson counties. The county is a peninsula located on the west side of Puget Sound.
