| Introduction |
The Washington Territorial Legislature created Mason County on March 9, 1854. Originally named Sawamish (meaning a drifting or not a permanent people) after the local Native American tribe, the county’s name changed in 1864 to honor Charles Mason, the first Secretary of Washington Territory. There are 326 names listed on this census. |
